This an introduction to the Excel concepts used throughout the text. When Excel starts, a window like the one in Figure 1 appears. This is called a workbook. It is composed of a number of sheets called worksheets that have tabs at the bottom of the window with names displayed on them: Sheet 1, Sheet 2, and so forth. The main components of

Figure 1 that must be known in order to use Excel are the Menu Bar, Tool Bars, Formula Bar, Active or Selected Cell, Fill Handle, Scroll Bars, Tab Scroll Buttons, and Status Bar. Each of these components is labeled in Figure 1. The Menu Bar and Tool Bars are used to select the
various actions Excel performs. Examples are printing, copying, selecting fonts, centering, changing colors, sorting, solving equations, checking spelling, and doing statistical analysis.
